After meeting with Mrs. Buckley, I received a copy of the topics to be covered in her earth science class. I will most likely be teaching three periods of earth science with her as well as one section of Anatomy. I learned that the 9th grade Earth Science class covers the same topics as the eighth grade curriculum in further detail. I have decided to do my unit plan on the topics we will be covering in Earth Science because they follow the state standards, and may be more relevant to me in my teaching because I have a strong desire to be a middle school teacher. I will most likely take part in teaching two units with my cooperating teacher. One unit is on Plate tectonics and the other unit is on Space Science.
For this assignment, I assume we need to do a unit from start to finish. I have chosen to do a unit on plate tectonics. The major topics of the unit will be plate tectonics/boundaries, seafloor spreading and hot spots. The theory of plate tectonics will be covered (ESS1-2). Also types of boundaries, the mechanics of plate movement, hot spots and magnetic fields (ESS1-3) will be studied. Epicenters and seismic activities will be explained (PS3-10) Geological time dating methods will be taught (ESS1-4). There will be hands on labs to cover sea floor spreading, Hawaii on the move, epicenters, subducting plates and faults.
I hope to use differentiated instruction with the students to reach as many students as possible with different learning styles. I hope to use anticipation guides as we enter into new topics to find out what my students already know and where many of their misconceptions are. I will try to use interactive games to keep the energy level up in the classroom. I will also use graphic organizers to help the students to clarify difficult material. I plan to incorporate a scientific inquiry lab into the unit. I of course will need to spend some more time with my CT so I can balance my lessons with the teaching strategies I have learned, and what will be appropriate for the students who have already begun their year with Mrs. Buckley.
